Social Media and Your Company

With the introduction of Social Media everything that we know has changed. An online community of Facebook and Twitter users can make or break your business with some ticking of a keyboard and a click of a button. Your business could potentially be getting hundreds of good or bad reviews through a mobile community of users on Foursquare & Yelp, literally reviewing you as they are actively in your building, without you even knowing it. With the exponential growth of social media sites, you must ask yourself… Where are you spending the majority of your time and marketing dollars? Is it all going towards that billboard on Rt 22 where hundreds of people see it everyday, but the same hundred as they drive back and forth to work, OR are you spending SOME of your marketing dollars on a social media marketing plan were you could reach hundreds of thousands of potential new customers EVERYDAY!
** For the first time, in 2010, ending a 23 year run, Pepsi Cola pulled out of advertising in the Super Bowl ditching it for Social Media.**

*If Facebook were a nation, they would be the 3rd largest in the world.*

Facebook is one of the best ways to bring new customers to your business. For each person you attract to your Facebook page, you expose yourself to hundreds of potential clients. Each of your Facebook fans has multiple people they interact with on Facebook. These people are able to see their friend is a fan of yours, giving your business a certain level of credibility. To give you an idea of how broad your Facebook reach is, consider a relatively conservative estimate. During your first day with a Facebook page, ten existing customers click on the like button to join your Facebook network. Each of these ten people have 50 friends. You have just exposed your business to 500 potential customers. All of this happened for free and in the blink of an eye.

Twitter is consistent. You are able to stay in the minds of potential and current clients without bothering them. With Twitter, you can be a part of their lives without being intrusive. They might check into their Twitter accounts once a day and as long as you have made a post, you will be at the forefront of their minds. Twitter puts the consumer in control of how much exposure they have to marketing information. Consumers like this, so if you can find a way to utilize this method of advertising, you are one step ahead of traditional marketing methods.

Linkedin is a business oriented social network for professionals, and it’s huge, with nearly 50 million users from over 200 countries. LinkedIn has some powerful features that most people don’t use. For example, you can encourage your customers, clients or vendors to give you a “recommendation” on your profile. Recommendations are useful because they’ll make you and your business more credible with new customers. You’ll find such recommendations useful – particularly since your LinkedIn profile will come up high in search engine results.

Yelp publishes millions of reviews about local businesses. Foursquare is a combination city-guide, friend finder and competitive game. It allows users to “check in” by cell phone at a local venue and announce this via other social networks such as Twitter. You can also proactively use Yelp and other similar services to promote your business. Ask your customers, friends and family who have used your services for a review on Yelp. You can encourage reviews by running promotions or discounts – offering free appetizers, for example, to a customer who will write a review about their meal at your restaurant. Similarly, you can find ways to promote your business using Foursquare. You can offer specials or discounts to the person who visits your location the most (this is similar to frequent buyer cards that many businesses have used for years).

Multimedia is a bit more complicated for many small businesses to execute, but can provide excellent social media marketing opportunities. For example, you may use YouTube to post how-to videos in your blog or on your website to allow “free” info for your customers use, thus strengthening your company/customer bond that may result in sales.
